Mark is a community driven project that aims to build and extend existing informal systems
Design for Locality
Fact: no informal settlement is the same—from the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil to the slums of Kibera, Kenya. They can, however, be defined by a number of core attributes, such as a lack of access to essential infrastructures, insecure tenure of property, low social mobility and substandard housing. These characteristics represent an overlap among all informal settlement, but does not acknowledge the uniqueness of each community. Mark, an early-stage mapping tool, aims to provide a locally relevant and approachable method for inhabitants of informal settlements to document their lives within these dwellings. By relying on existing social systems and by enabling citizens to become citizen cartographers, Mark hopes to increase access to products, services, opportunities, education and physical infrastructure throughout these communities.
